PHD. PROGRAMMES (for international students)

1. General information

The University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), Vietnam National University (VNU), Hanoi currently delivers 8 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes:

4 programmes in Linguistics: English Linguistics, Russian Linguistics, French Linguistics, Chinese Linguistics

4 programmes in Language Teaching Methodology: English Language Teaching Methodology, Russian Language Teaching Methodology, French Language Teaching Methodology, Chinese Language Teaching Methodology

2. Entry requirements
3. Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Arts in one of the following programmes: English Linguistics, Russian Linguistics, French Linguistics, Chinese Linguistics, English Language Teaching Methodology, Russian Language Teaching Methodology, French Language Teaching Methodology, Chinese Language Teaching Methodology
4. At least 1 journal article (for research-based MA students) or 2 journal articles (for course-based MA students or BA students) published in specialist scientific journals or published in National or International Conference Proceedings with peer reviewing/ refereeing and ISBN code. The topics discussed in the articles must be related to the topic of the research proposal for the PhD programme.
5. Certificate of Vietnamese proficiency (level 4/6 in the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework) or Certificate of English proficiency (level 4/6 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
6. Programme structure

99 credits including a 80 credit PhD dissertation  

4. Training time

3 years of full time training with at least 12 consecutive months of taking taught components on campus for MA student’s applicant

4 years of full time training with at least 24 consecutive months of taking taught components on campus for BA student’s applicant

In certain circumstances, students can have 2 years of extension.

5. Tuition fee

The tuition fee for international students is subjected to change annually: The current tuition fee is 85.000.000VND per annum (US$3,863 approximately) plus US$200 registration fee.

Visa fee: 135 USD/ year (as by Immigration Department - Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam)

Hostel fee: 40 USD/ student/ month (room of six) or 250 USD/ month (single room)

NOTE:  Students will be assisted in getting a study visa (with multiple entries) on arrival at the International Airports and the tuition fee will have been paid before getting any visa assistance.

6. Scholarships

Annually, ULIS – VNU awards scholarships to international students registered in Ph.D. programmes. The amount awarded can vary depending on the current financial aid policies of ULIS – VNU. The maximum amount awarded is equal to three-fourths of the tuition fee a student pays for one academic year.

International PhD. students who have articles published in ISI and Scopus indexed journals during their study at ULIS-VNU are awarded 16,000,000 VND (sixteen million Vietnamese Dong) per article.

7. Certificate awarded

Doctor of Philosophy in one of the following programmes: English Linguistics, Russian Linguistics, French Linguistics, Chinese Linguistics, English Language Teaching Methodology, Russian Language Teaching Methodology, French Language Teaching Methodology, Chinese Language Teaching Methodology  

8. Online and Document Submissions

Each applicant should:

8.1. Register online at the website of ULIS - VNU: http://admissions-apply.vnu.edu.vn and,

8.2. Submit 1 set of documents (printed on A4-size paper) listed hereunder. Documents in languages other than English or Vietnamese must be attached with duly notarized translation into English or Vietnamese. The submitted documents will not in any case be returned to the applicants:

1. Completed application form
2. Copies and translation of degrees, diplomas and academic transcripts applicable for relevant levels of proposed study, duly notarized or certified by competent authorities of the sending country
3. Medical examination certificate issued within 6 months from the date of application by competent health authorities of the sending country or by Vietnamese central, municipal or provincial medical bodies, clearly stating that the applicant is healthy and fit for overseas study
4. Duly certified copies of Vietnamese Proficiency Certificate or internationally recognized Certificate of English proficiency
5. Copies of financial guarantee to support study, research and living in Vietnam
6. Research proposal
7. Letters of Recommendation provided by 2 researchers or scholars who hold doctorate degrees and have similar fields of research with the research topic in the research proposal
8. Duly certified copies of documents and certificates about the applicant’s aptitude, expertise, research achievements, ... (if any)
9. Copy of passport with a validity of the expected duration of study in Vietnam for at least 1 year from the expected arrival in Vietnam

Note: BA. students have to fulfill a 50 credit MA training programme (without a 15 credit MA thesis) during their PhD study at ULIS-VNU.
